Let Them Eat Cake - October 2006
The University Club, 215 College West Building, Regina
Wherever I go I am drawn to arrangements of food, whether strewn on my kitchen counter, or in the variety of colours and shapes of organized displays in grocery stores or on market stalls. I am intrigued by intricate "compositions" of cakes and pastries in bakeries or coffee shops. I see beauty when I unwrap a piece of meat or fish to prepare for cooking, and in a basket of apples gathered from my garden. Seeing everyday images of food inspire me to capure and translate my observations into painting.
Choosing and arranging the objects is an important part of my process. Ideas for compositions range from a family dinner party to a newly baked loaf of bread.
In these works, I have used traditional painting techniques and almost always paint from real objects. As an example, for the painting Let them eat Cake inspired by the new movie Marie Antoinette, I created cakes and meringues for my still life set up.
Although I am strongly influenced by painters of the past, I am also inspired by the current burgeoning role food plays in popular culture. Searching for trendy restaurants, keeping up with the latest cooking shows, style magazines and recipe books, are currently hot topics.
Historical painters of food often focussed on the process of decay to warn viewers of the brevity of life. This is not so in these pieces. Rather, I invite you only to ivoke your senses and to celebrate with me an appreciation of the pleasures of good food.
