Jean Littlejohn Double Trouble Jean Littlejohn and Jan Beaney have been friends and professional colleagues for many years and have recently had a joint exhibition entitled ‘Seeing Double’ within the Knitting and Stitching Show. Their work results from prolonged observation around individual themes recorded in sketchbooks and developed into stitched pieces. The exhibition allowed them to demonstrate that you can see the same things but express them visually in very different ways. For many years Jan has been exploiting the use of soluble fabrics and her recent Australian pieces that evoke the raw expansive qualities of the landscape are worked in wonderful shades of reds and ochres. These contrast with the studies of her local field and the powerful impact of yellow oilseed rape. Jean has worked an extensive theme based on pavements and carpets exploiting the lace like qualities of worn surfaces and the history of the people who might have used them. The embellishing machine has given her the opportunity to create fused mixed media surfaces that can make subtle references to history. They continue to collaborate on their Double Trouble Books that allow them to explore new technical and visual ideas that they use in their own work and share with others.. |
