Naomi Renouf
Although originally a painter, I have worked with a variety of media over the years. I have always loved textiles but until recently used these separately to other media.
Two years ago I started making my own paper and partly as a result of this I began to combine the use of acrylic paint and textiles.
I have often found inspiration for my work in the Jersey countryside, the sea and the sky. I rarely sketch or put anything down on paper in preparation for my finished pieces because I find that this makes them lose their spontaneity. I work from remembered images- the pictures in my mind. I try to portray the essence of the place or experience and my feelings about it.
Sometimes I get my inspiration from the materials themselves. start work with just a blank piece of my hand-made paper and start to paint. Then I apply textiles. The paper starts to take on a character and the picture evolves bit by bit. Often these are the pieces that I like the best. They are an adventure and the finished work is often a surprise even to me.
I love the tactile qualities of the materials that I work with. Thi is why most of my recent pieces are not behind glass. They need to be touched as well as looked at.
