Expressive Markmaking- Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 10.00am - 1.00pm
Quentin Blake said 'It Is the quality of the mark that matters" - and the great Japanese master Hokusai, "From the age of six I had a mania for drawing forms of things...by the time I am 110 years old, everything I do, be it a line or dot - will be alive". The expressive mark is the basis of all art and design, and of the letters which clamour for our attention in every corner of our environment. Now composed of abstract symbols (-of expressive marks-) it is their particular qualities, design and "Body language" which assist their power to inform, persuade, stimulate and delight.
This abstract Markmaking Workshop, will help you to express your thoughts and reactions to a range of musical forms without using letters or images. Using a variety of media you will be encouraged to make fascinating and aesthetic marks which carry meaning with eloquence, thus enriching your drawing ability and forming a bridge with the poetic design of letterforms. By the end of the morning you will have refined one of your drawings into a finished artwork with emphasis on composition and a brave attempt to retain the vivacity of the original!

Paper Lamination - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 2.00pm - 5.00pm
Paper lamination is a simple but dynamic method of combining words and images and of trapping a collage of thoughts, dreams and memories within two dimensions. During this workshop you will learn to make semi- transparent multi layered artworks which can be made at any scale and form a valuable contribution to textile book making or sculptural activities - among others.

Collage elements for lamination:
for example...
Flat "found" objects, e.g.: string/wire/cottons/leaves/foil/tea leaves/cloth/sand/pins/fruit nets/wrapping paper/feathers
Torn/cut fragments of artwork: drawings/rubbings from textures/prints/photocopies/cuttings/lettering in type and handwritten
Machine and handsewn scraps of paper and thin cloth

WOODBLOCK PRINTNG
Traditional Japanese Woodblock Print process involves endless care, skill and patience.
The Japanese artist produces many colour blocks and thinks nothing of repeating prints hundreds of times over.
The Woodblock prints of the west are usually of a single impression and in one colour. European woodcuts that date back to the early 15th century were often used for religious reference, however German artists in the later part of the century raised the woodcut to a fine art.
You will use both oil and water based inks. The choice of printing papers is huge from soft handmade papeers to more traditional papers.

Cost: £38.00 a day to include lunch, equipment and materials [£35.00 Friends]. Two sponsored places from Art in the Frame Foundation to full time students at £22.00.

Booking: To take part in this hands on workshop producing wonderful prints please use our printable application form or contact us with a query. All places will be on a "First booked" basis.
