On a high bank at Sutton, not far from the 100ft river, A Fryer, 1882, CGE.
...in October, 1892, I found it growing plentifully at Water-gull Hill, Sutton,... It extended over the bank of the lowered road the whole length of the hill; some plants growing on the highest and dryest part, sixty or seventy feet above the level of the Fens, a considerable elevation in this flat country. The plants were very luxuriant, some being quite eighteen inches high.... Like many other annual plants it does not appear every season; this year not one could be found, although it is evidently well established from the great extent and varied nature of the ground covered. Alfred Fryer. J.Bot. 1884,28.

Many thanks for the specimen of Bupleurum tenuissimum from Sutton. I have no record of its growing inland since the time of T. Martyn, or other than those recorded in the Camb. Flora p.96.... I presume that the Aster and this Bupleurum are remnants of an old tidal flora, before the erection of Denver sluices. 21.10.1882. In litt. to A Fryer. Bab.Mem.397.

Newbould and I went to Wisbech... then along the old drain to Foul Anchor, where we looked for the plants recorded to have been formerly found there. The salt marshes have quite vanished, and therefore very few of the plants remain. We saw... Bupleurum tenuissimum,... 3.10.1853. Bab.Mem.171.

Foul Anchor, (Locally frequent) At base of bank against 'salt-marsh' grassland, c.466.176, SM Walters, 18.8.1973, CGE.
Ungrazed washland, presumably mown (cf correspondence between Nature Conservancy and River Authority) with Bupleurum loc.feq. in the mainly Agrostis stolonifera & Agropyron pungens rather open turf between the salt-marsh turf of the flat washland & the bank itself, which had a mixed, non-saline vegetation. An obvious associate (with a similar niche?) was Trifolium fragiferum. The Bupleurum extended from very near the fence (with Lycium halimifolium) for about 70 yds towards the Lincs border. 466.176. None was actually seen in Lincs. Note, and Pop. Map shows the Bupleurum for c.100 metres only at bottom of sloping bank with an estimated 100 fruiting plants. SM Walters (and Cambient Excursion), 18.8.1973.
Foul Anchor, more widespread then in 1973 – along base of sloping bank and in the mown area of 6 yards of salt marsh, between the bank and c.10 yds of unmown Agropyron pungens which extends to river bank. Sketch map and CSs, G Crompton and R Payne, 29.8.1975.

The marsh has been recently grazed and trampled by cattle. Due to a very high tide the previous day, the whole area has much lying water. Bupleurum extends for about 20 yds between 90 and 70yards from the countyrrow band by a sort of path on and in the edge of the Elymus pungens area on the higher edge of marsh, between c.5ft of the edge of the large pool of water still present and c.20 yds from the embankment.
