Athamanta Libanotis In the time of Ray, this plant was known to grow wild on the Gogmagog hills, Cambridgeshire; but from that period no botanist has met with it there till the year 1783, when it was detected by the Rev. Mr. Relhan, to whom we are obliged for the wild specimen here represented. Smith,Eng.Bot. (1793) 2:138.

Gogs, [487.539] good population, GMS Easy, 1969. [Probably Ray's locality]
Large numbers (c.?500) in fruit over 150 sq yds in area of 'rough' west of small mixed plantation and south of 2nd Green, 437.539, G Crompton, GMS Easy & P Darling, 1.10.1975.
14 fl. stalks and c.500 veg. plants in rough grassland with scattered Rosa and Crataegus bushes, on SSW slope under new plantation of Pinus nigra, Betula & Populus, planted c.1965?, Seseli most abundant at SW edge of plantation, but a few plants along south edge and outliers to north, Pop. map and assoc. species, G Crompton & R Mellors, 1.10. and seed coll. 20.10.1975.
Seed for Kew coll. by RW Mellors, 1976.
c.50 fl. spikes, GMS Easy, 8.1980.
c.20 flowering stalks, several hundred vegetative plants growing in rough grassland at plantation edge. Outlying plants not found. Pop. map & assoc. species list, S Lambert, 21.8.1986; much as in 1975, scrub a little larger than 11 years ago. Seseli still doing well. Only 1 outlier found, on S edge, near Sorbus aria, and with a large patch of Thymus praecox. Agreed pathway could be cleared through the colony. It was noticeable that there are dead stems looking grey in Crata mon, and Privet does not appear to be v.happy! G Crompton, S Lambert and PJO Trist, 25.11.1986.
Area behind the 3rd tee... at least a dozen plants although none were in flower... this area should be a priority for clearance [of scrub] in 1993/4. Colin Newlands with Sharon Hearle, 5.7.1993.
CHERRY HINTON
Cherry Hinton Chalk–pit Close, found by Mr Relhan and brought me.... Rev Mr Davies, Fellow of Trinity College, 26.8.1783, Sir TG Cullum ann Hudson ed.2, p.115, WSRO.
'...one Plant I hope you will be surprised to see, the Athamanta Libanotis. Mr Hudson in his first Edition was correct in his second he has blundered sadly and has evidently shown that he knows neither the oreoselinum [sp?] nor the Libanotis, the first of which we are unacquainted with at Cambridge and the latter has not been found since the time of Ray, till I accidently observ'd it. it grows in chalk pit Close near Cherry Hinton. Plukinets Figure is a tolerably good one, tho' it does not show the peculiar make of the leaves the Figure of Rivinus is a much better one and the Diagnosis in the Flora Suecica will I hope be thought sufficient to ascertain my Plant.' Relhan, in litt. to R Pulteney, Cambridge, 10.9.1783, LINN.
'Sir, I feel great pleasure in sending you seeds of a very ancient inhabitant of our County, whom the Cambridge Botanists have entirely overlooked; the Athamanta Libanotis was very fortunately discovere'd by me in a Close about three Miles from Cambridge. the accurate Ray says it grows on Gogmagog Hills, it probably did in his time tho' now it certainly is not there. all the good specimens I had were lately sent to the Person who makes the Drawings for my Work as I intend to give a large figure of it. I hope those enclosed will afford you some satisfaction. next summer I shall be able to supply you amply.' Relhan, in litt. to R Pulteney, Cambridge, 2.1.1784, LINN.

...I see you quote Hinton as the station of the beautiful Athamantha. I could go to the spot, if it be in Ray's Field, as well as to that of Lonicera caprifolium & Viburnum lantana. All were planted there by Relhan; at least he owned this as to Athamantha, & did not disown it as to the others. He was a slippery chap, but we must allow him the benefit of that humbugginh 'de Mortuis nil nisi bonum' upon which too many have the claim of charity.
