Fiddler on the Roof by Denise Deegan Photos from Fiddler >>> Directed by Carol Ruderham and produced by Alan Cadoret. Programme Notes Dear Guests We would like to welcome you to the Jersey Opera House and the JADC's production of Fiddler on the Roof. We feel very privileged to be staging this show at this time as it is generally not possible for amateur companies to stage major musicals when they are also running in the 'West End' as normally the rights would be reserved. During our rehearsal people have asked what the meaning is of the continuous appearance of the 'Fiddler'. A 'Fiddler' on a pointed Roof would be in a precarious situation, while sliding his bow across the instrument, he'd have to be careful not to fall off the roof to one side or the other. Only with great balance can he play the best music. In 'Fiddler on the Roof', Tevye lives life like he is also a fiddler on the roof. He is a good man who tries to live the best life he can for God, but is constantly pulled off to one side or the other. On one side of the roof is the traditions he and the village have grown up with while on the other side lie his three eldest daughters whose actions call for reform. When Tevye is faced with an issue he often states both sides of the story - or roof- to find the most balanced answer. When the Fiddler is featured in a scene, he is often representing what Tevye wants but is unwilling to say. Finally we would like to say thank you to the cast and production crew but especially to Keith our Musical Director and his assistant Wendy, Gloria and Maxine for the Cheorgraphy, Sylvia for costumes and a special thanks to Betty for the hard work and endless hours of support throughout the whole show. It has been a very happy and exciting production to work on and we hope you enjoy the results. So please sit back and relax and enjoy your trip to Russia. Carol and Alan ABOUT THE SHOW Fiddler on the Roof is about human values at a time, like today, when there is confusion over those values. It is about the breaking down of traditions when some people are still trying to uphold these traditions. It is about a man and his relationship with his family, his people, the enemies of his people and of his love of man for woman, of men for their fellow men and for their birthplace. It is about pride, dignity, sorrow and oppression. It takes place in a small village in Czarist Russia called Anatevka in 1905 but it really takes place everywhere. Fiddler on the Roof is concerned primarily with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife, Golde, and their five daughters to cope with their harsh existence under Tsarist rule. Marriage for love at the turn of the century was not a privilege of poverty. Custom dictated that all proper weddings had to be arranged by a matchmaker and approved by the Papa. Tevye's daughters wonder if the matchmaker will ever find them the men of their dreams. The Story continues to show how Tevye's has become aware of the changing times but he has a hard time convincing his wife, Golde that things are different and that love matters more than traditions. Keith Sunter BA Hons (Music) Keith spent nine years as an Army Musician but now plays Tuba with many of the Islands ensembles including the Championship winning brass band Jersey Premier Brass, he is also the Musical Director for La Ronde Concert Band. Although Keith has some considerable experience conducting and directing UK and local choirs and various musical groups this is the first venture in to this particular genre as Musical Director. The experience has been rewarding and very exciting for him adding another facet of musicianship to his CV. Keith says that the whole company have been very supportive and welcomed him to the club room not only as a new member but as a friend. The bond established has grown considerably over the months of rehearsal and he hopes what you hear and see tonight will demonstrate how much the relationship has been cemented with this wonderful production. Gloria Le Boutiller Gloria was a professional dancer at the age of fourteen and a half and five years later became a Cheorgrapher as well as performing herself. She came to Jersey twenty years ago to perform and do the Cheorography with her troupe of Dancers for two summer season's. Gloria is the principal of 'Footloose', Dance-singing and Drama in which stage work is taught and she specialises in Russian Dance. Gloria would like to thank Maxine Preddy, a dance teacher and friend for being her 'legs' during the rehearsals as she has recently undertaken major surgery and could only sit and direct the choreography.
