Three Colours: RedShown: 11 December 2000
SynopsisValentine (Irène Jacob) is a restless, solitary model living in Geneva. Nearby lives Auguste (Jean-Pierre Lorit). Their paths cross but they seem destined never to meet. Whilst driving at night Valentine injures the dog of Joseph Kern, a cynical, retired judge and so starts an unlikely friendship. The judge is the mirror image of the young lawyer Auguste. A beautifully realised and sensuously photographed story of the fates which guide and sometimes divide us. At the end of the film the random contacts and coincidences which have intrigued us are satisfactorily resolved.
Three colours:Red was the last of the trilogy of films which took their titles Blue, White and Red from the colours of the French flag. Many critics were dismayed that the film was not eligible for the Best Foreign Film Oscar as it was considered a subtle masterpiece and one of the exceptional motion pictures of 1994. "Outstanding - the best of European cinema" Derek Malcolm. |
