n 1983 René Ray, Countess of Middleton, became the patron of the Film Society. The Countess had been a star of British films in the 1930s such as The Passing of the Third Floor Back, and she went on to work on the London stage during the Second World War. For more about René Ray try her page on the IMDB, a 1938 studio portrait by Angus McBean and a René Ray cigarette card.

Having appeared in over 40 films she retired to Jersey, and the Film Society was very pleased when she agreed to become patron. René Ray died in 1993, but shortly before her death she gave a marvellous introduction to The Four Feathers, a stirring British adventure film of the 1930s, in which she described the excitement of working in the British film industry in its heyday.

The picture shows René Ray being presented with a bouquet by Maryan Talbot-Roberts on the occasion of the Society's 40th anniversary.
