The films shown during 1996/97 (in order of popularity) were: Derek Malcolm, film critic with The Guardian and President of the British Federation of Film Societies, introduced Bandit Queen. Sally Sampson, for over ten years film and video examiner for the British Board of Film Censors and currently a programme officer for the Independent Television Commission, responsible for cinema and drama, introduced To Live . Phill Walkley, past chair of the British Federation of Film Societies, has compiled and directed the film element in 'The Living Picture Show'. Mr Walkley introduced Cinema Paradiso. The film was sponsored by JFS patron Harry Patterson. Andrew Youdell, who provided piano accompaniment to our silent films, has been instrumental in screenings in Britain and abroad of films such as 'The Italian Straw Hat' and Abel Gance's 'Napoleon'. Mr Youdell introduced The Italian Straw Hat and The Phantom of the Opera. David Gainsborough Roberts sponsored and introduced Lawrence of Arabia. From his extensive collection of film memorabilia, he supplied some of Lawrence's possessions for viewing before the screening.
