Last Meeting
Our last meeting now seems a long time ago and of course that is so,
because it was held very early to coincide with Awareness Week and
the visit of our Area Officer, Sheila Windsor, who spoke to us at
the meeting about her work and the latest developments concerning
P.D. We were delighted to see Sheila again in Jersey and some of you
will no doubt have heard her excellent interview on Radio Jersey,
in which she put across very positive messages concerning Parkinson's
and the activities of our branch.
Awareness Week Collections
Thanks are due to Peter Hobson and his team of helpers for the supermarket
collections which raised a splendid total of £449.81.
New Brochures for Jersey Branch
We are proud of our first venture into publishing with a small brochure
describing our activities locally and those of the P.D.S. in general
and Sheila Windsor said it was by far the best she had seen. We have
been very fortunate in having the free services of a designer to integrate
the text (supplied by Roger) and the photographs (mainly supplied
by Alan Smith) and we have also been fortunate in receiving financial
help for the printing. One copy is being sent to each of you, except
those who received one at the last meeting. Please see if your doctor
or chemist will display our brochures at their surgery/pharmacy, as
it will help to get us better known and promote our activities and
fundraising efforts. If they will help please let Roger know (Tel:
731145) and he will deliver a quantity where needed. The brochure
incidentally shows our new website address and we are very proud of
this and it is updated each month with the newsletter included. We
were again fortunate in having the free services of a website designer,
who has done some excellent work on our behalf.
Future Holidays
We are planning to arrange for free one week holidays for sufferers
who are unable to leave the island and these will be at Maison des
Landes Hotel, St. Ouen. The hotel arrange for daily outings and carers
may stay there if desired. Bookings have to be made well in advance
and when Roger enquired earlier this year it was discovered that this
season is already virtually booked up. We will therefore need to book
very early for next season and we hope to arrange for a group of our
members to be there in the same week. If you are interested please
telephone Roger or Joyce on 731145 and if you have a preferred month
or a time when you would be otherwise engaged please say so as early
as possible so that we can accommodate you for the 2003 season.
Special Car Seats
Do you have great difficulty getting in and out of your car? If so
the branch may be able to help by replacing your car seat with a special
rotating seat which turns through 90¾, so that you can be seated outside
the car and can then rotate the seat inwards and vice versa. These
seats are expensive and therefore you would need to be sure that you
would keep the same car or an identical model for a good period and
we would need to have an occupational therapist assess your needs,
to be sure that it would be of real benefit and justified. If you
are interested please telephone Roger on 731145, We have leaflets
and a video available to show you what is involved.
Bowls Session
Peter Hobson is organising another ten pin bowling morning, with lunch,
on Tuesday 11th June 2002 at 11 a.m. Please contact Peter on 724660
if you would like to join in. Transport can be arranged.
Eileen asks if everyone could bring a prize (£1 value) as we'll
be having a pairs competition.

Weekly Exercise Sessions
Tina Borfiga would like to invite new members along to our Dao Yin
classes at Springfield on Monday afternoons at 3.15 p.m. She would
also like to see some of you come back to the classes as well. Tina
has worked very hard in adapting our original routine, to incorporate
a lot less co-ordination in having to think what your hands and feet
are doing at the same time, to concentrating on one or the other and
there are a lot more seated exercises. Exercise is important to keep
you flexible and mobile, so why not come along and be pleasantly surprised.
We always have a cup of tea and a chat afterwards.
New Members
We'd like to take this opportunity of welcoming new members to the
branch and to try and encourage you to join in outings and activities,
as well as the weekly Dao Yin exercise class on a Monday. There's
the use of Cheshire Homes heated swimming pool on a Wednesday afternoon.
We also provide a taxi service to and from doctors and hospital appointments,
and because you're a member it is all free. We're a friendly bunch
and we do a lot of laughing and have a lot of fun. There is life after
Parkinsons, so come and join our family!! Phone Marian or Eileen
on 721927 or 737128, they'd love to hear from you.
Next meeting
Our next meeting will be at 8 p.m at Communicare as usual on Tuesday
28th May and we will be given a talk by Nigel Gates concerning his
roles as a pantomime dame and Nigel plans to bring along one or more
of his costumes and a dresser to assist him. Not only this but Nigel
will hopefully also find time to talk to us about his Battle of Flowers
floats which he assembles and exhibits with a group of friends and
supporters and for which awards have been won. This promises to be
a really interesting and fun evening, so why not come along and be
entertained. |
